Bilaspur Train Accident: A major train accident occurred in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. A MEMU passenger train collided with a freight train after Bilaspur Railway Station. The collision was head-on, causing one coach of the passenger train to roll over the freight train. So far, reports of four to six deaths have emerged, while dozens are reported injured. Following the train accident, the Railways immediately began relief and rescue operations.
The Railways has dispatched a relief convoy to the accident site, and other senior officials are also arriving. The biggest question among people after this train accident is what are the rules regarding compensation in the Railways? Have the Railways established any regulations regarding the death or injury of passengers during a train accident or other travel events? Let's find out.
How is compensation received?
After the Bilaspur train accident that claimed four lives and injured several others, the question arises as to how the Railways provides compensation to passengers. If a passenger is involved in an accident while boarding a train or during a journey, they or their family can receive compensation. IRCTC offers passengers the option of travel insurance when booking tickets.
This forms the basis for compensation in the event of an accident. Under this insurance, a fixed amount is paid in case of death, permanent disability, or serious injury. The Railway administration also provides relief assistance, depending on the severity and circumstances of the accident.
How much compensation is received?
According to Railway rules, if a passenger dies or becomes permanently disabled in a train accident, their family is awarded compensation of up to ₹10 lakh. In the case of partial disability, the compensation is capped at ₹7.5 lakh. If a passenger is seriously injured, they are provided with assistance of up to ₹2 lakh. Even for minor injuries, the Railways provides compensation of up to ₹10,000. This amount is provided under IRCTC's travel insurance or the Railway Administration's relief assistance scheme.
