The scriptures emphasize the special importance of worshipping God in Hinduism. Everyone performs daily prayers to please God. It is observed that most people who have faith in God never forget to light incense sticks in front of God. Whether at home or in a temple, incense sticks are a must along with offerings. Some burn two sticks, while others burn five. Incense sticks with different scents are available in the market, but do you know whether burning incense sticks is auspicious or inauspicious in Hinduism? Let's find out from Ujjain's Pandit Anand Bhardwaj.
Burning bamboo in worship is not auspicious.
According to the scriptures, burning incense sticks is not mentioned. Dhoop sticks or camphor are mentioned everywhere. According to Hindu beliefs, bamboo is used in making bier, but bamboo is not burned in cremation. Therefore, burning incense sticks made from bamboo is not considered auspicious in worship. Bamboo is worshipped in weddings, sacred thread ceremonies, and tonsure ceremonies. In weddings, mandaan (sacred thread ceremony), mandaan (sun-worship) ceremonies, etc., a mandaan (wedding mandap) is made and decorated with bamboo. Therefore, burning bamboo incense sticks is considered prohibited in puja rituals.
How many incense sticks should be burned during puja?
When something becomes a tradition, it cannot be prohibited. Therefore, if you burn incense sticks during puja, according to Ujjain's Pandit Anand, always burn two. This ensures the blessings of the gods and goddesses and brings peace, happiness, and prosperity to the home. Burning four incense sticks is considered a symbol of power. Using them in special religious rituals and yagnas is highly beneficial. Burning four incense sticks is believed to provide relief from obstacles and troubles in the home.
Know the rules when lighting incense sticks.
Regarding the rules for burning incense sticks, only incense sticks that are in perfect condition and unbroken should be burned. Only those incense sticks that are fragrant should be burned. Do not blow on them while lighting them. As per the rules of burning incense sticks, after lighting it, rotate it in all four directions.
